Many workers made redundant as a result of the Global Financial Crisis will benefit from the changes to employment services announced today by the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister for Employment Participation, Brendan O'Connor.

The Major Church Providers of social services in Australia say although the detail is sparse, the gist of today's changes shows the Government is serious about helping recently retrenched workers and the agencies who are working with them.

The group welcomes the urgency with which the Government seeks to address many of the issues facing Australians in the current jobs climate and looks forward to discussing the detail in the days ahead.

The major church provider networks deliver the majority of social services in Australia. Spokespeople include:

Lin Hatfield Dodds, National Director, UnitingCare Australia
Kasy Chambers, Executive Director, Anglicare Australia
Frank Quinlan, Executive Director, Catholic Social Services Australia
